All four lanes of Mayfield Road in Cleveland Heights will close Monday, Nov. 2, for approximately three weeks due to a sanitary-sewer overflow, according to the City of Cleveland Heights.
The closure affects the stretch near the hill heading into Little Italy, blocking travel between Cleveland Heights, Little Italy and University Circle.
The City of Cleveland Heights said in a Facebook post that drivers in Cleveland Heights should follow Mayfield Road to Kenilworth Road, then Euclid Heights Boulevard. On the Cleveland side, detours run via Cornell Road to Edgehill Road or MLK Drive to Cedar-Glen.
RTA and Case buses will be rerouted; riders can check riderta.com and universitycircle.org for updates. Pedestrians will still have access to the sidewalk on the Lakeview Cemetery side.
The work is a sanitary-sewer overflow separation project tied to Cleveland Heights' consent decree with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Separating the old combined sewer system will reduce pathogens reaching Lake Erie, according to the city.
A second phase is scheduled for spring 2027 and will involve closures at Kenilworth and Edgehill roads.
